Recycling old cell phones not only helps the environment by saving energy but they contain harmful substances like arsenic and lead that can leak into our surroundings. Precious metals and plastics are used in the manufacturing process and these can be reused once recovered.
The International Telecommunications Union make known recently the results of a study showing that over 4 billion citizens in the world subscribe to cell phones, confirming what a phenomenon this technology really is.
Nokia revealed that less than 3 % of phone users are making use of the various collection services available. The complete industry, requires new schemes and better campaigns to increase consumer awareness. With one billion handsets made every year, the need to recycle old ones instead is becoming crystal clear.
Recellular reconditions handsets from telecom companies like O2 to sell on and dismantles them for recycling. Their VP Mike Newman, stresses that in the United States over 125 million cellular phones are disposed of in waste bins every year, he believes that new initiatives are needed to affect change and alter people’s habits
